Alex Ross Gets in on the 'Action'

I am pretty easy to please when it comes to re-imaginings of classic comic book covers. I tend to enjoy work like this from Alex Ross than the paintings of famous characters staring into the camera with an imposing glare. Of course this is Ross' version of Action Comics #1 (below), which will serve as a variant cover for Action Comics 900th issue.

Action Comics #900 is scheduled for release this April with Paul Cornell and Pete Woods on the main story: a face-off between Superman and Lex Luthor (this is news because Supes has been absent for months from the title). A cadre of unnamed writers and artists will be on hand to usher in the milestone comic book.

Alex Ross's Latest Project: 'Bring the Thunder'

The cover for Dynamite’s new series Bring the Thunder is an example of Alex Ross’s best work. It’s dynamic and it promises a story that is both dramatic and sci-fi. I’m sometimes left cold by the artist’s work—mainly if it’s just a painting of a character, or characters, simply standing there.

Bring the Thunder is a new comic book with a story by Ross and written by Jai Nitz (Kato: Origins) with art by Wilson Tortosa (Ross is also on cover duty for the book). Dynamite describes the new book as follows:

“Wayne Russell is an elite para-rescue jumper in the Air Force serving in Afghanistan. He leads the most rigorously trained troops on the most dangerous missions into enemy territory. During a deadly mission, Wayne’s team is ambushed. Mortally wounded, Wayne finds and fires an experimental weapon, but the weapon malfunctions. The result will change Wayne and warfare forever.”

Bring the Thunder is scheduled for release in December.
