Green Lantern 2 Still Happening: Now That's Shocking

Today Jef Robinov, the film group president at Warner Bros, confirmed that the WB is thinking about moving forward with Green Lantern 2. The film has 22 more countries to open in, so that should (finally) cover the costs for Green Lantern.

The idea is to go with a new director and focus on action and find a better balance for time spent in space.

Additionally Robinov says they have a solid script for a Flash film and that the WB is still interested in a Justice League film.

The superhero films of the summer are over and I have to say to me the big winner is Captain America. That film was just awesome.

However, I grew up loving Green Lantern and I wouldn't mind another film. Whether it be a sequel or a story with another Green Lantern. There are thousands of them.

Ain't His Name Sinestro? DC Reveals the Cover to 'Green Lantern' #1

Well I guess if Doctor Doom can side with Reed Richards, then this isn't a complete stretch either. DC revealed on their blog this morning that the newest member of the Green Lantern Corps is the guy we all thought was evil to his core: Sinestro.

We'll have to wait until September to see how it all goes down! For now, here's the solicit:

The Fanboy Divide: 'Green Lantern' and 'X-Men: First Class'

This is the first time I have written something in quite some time so I do apologise if I start rambling a little bit.

Anyway to the point of this article, I think that this year marks a rather odd occurrence for geek culture; namely the divide that separates the critical and fan reception of Green Lantern and X-Men: First Class. This article will read something like a mini review of GL and X-Men as well as an exploration as to the reasons why there is such a divide.

Now to play catch up for those who may not know the issue surrounding these two films. Green Lantern has been met with a largely positive reception from the fans, whereas it has taken something of a beating from the critics. The opposite situation appears to be true for X-Men, where the fans generally dislike it but the critics (and myself included) think it’s brilliant. This is not to say that there haven’t been fans VS. critics conflicts in the past; all one needs to do is look at a film like Tron:Legacy which was widely received by fans as being one of the most interesting, intelligent, and not to mention damn pretty films ever made whereas the critics largely thought of it as an underwritten mess with underdeveloped ideas which tries to sell itself on spectacle not substance.

Now to make things clear I do not like Green Lantern. I think it is a poorly written and directed mess, where characters randomly change motivations for no other reason than to serve the plot so thin I can practically see through it. To give the film it’s due, the first 20 or so minutes are quite good and Ryan Reynolds delivers a very good performance, further cementing his rather odd position in Hollywood as being the best part of otherwise atrocious (see what I did there?) comic book movies whereas I think that X-Men: First Class is one of the best comic book movies to come out in the last 10 years easily beating 90% of the competition and only just falling short of my personal favourite Spider-man 2. It’s a very smart, well directed, superbly acted character-driven film which touches upon the complexity of growing up and the horrors we all carry with us.

Warner Bros. Not So Bullish on 'Green Lantern' Sequel?

Okay, now this makes sense. Or dollars and cents.

After the Hollywood Reporter ran a story on Sunday indicating that Warner Bros. was considering a Green Lantern follow-up, the trade was informed by the studio that “no decision has been reached” to film a sequel.

This idea that Warners was even considering a sequel was confounding considering that the film is performing so tepidly. The trade also indicated that industry observers expect the film to net somewhere between $260 and $275 Million—not enough to cover its projected—although rumored—$400 Million price tag (this includes the film’s worldwide marketing expenses).

This really saddens me because I don’t think that the filmmakers brought the care and enthusiasm to this film that was necessary to not only kick-off a franchise, but also show the industry that DC’s second-tier characters are viable film properties.

Let’s go back to 2008, after Iron Man enjoyed an unexpectedly successful first weekend (and overwhelmingly positive reviews). On the following Monday, Marvel Studios laid out their three-year plan (which ballooned by a year) in which the company proudly announced their ambitious plans to bring Iron Man’s fellow teammates—Thor, Captain America and Ant Man—to the big-screen.

These films would culminate with an even more ambitious teaming of the heroes in The Avengers. While we continue to hear about forward movement on an Ant Man script, this summer has already seen the successful release of Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger is a few weeks away from release. That Avengers thing is already half way through its filming and is scheduled for release next year.

So yeah, I’m disappointed in what Green Lantern was as a film, but more importantly what it could have meant for harder to sell properties like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the Justice League. I don’t picture Warner Bros. doling out big bucks on movies like these without a proven track record.

On the bright side, we are getting Batman and Superman films next year.

Warner Bros. Possibly Eyeing 'Green Lantern' Sequel

Ryan Reynolds may wear the ring again after all.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on Sunday that Warner Bros. remains bullish on a sequel to Green Lantern. This is surprising since the film has performed lower that the expectations of the studio, which is sitting on a veritable treasure trove of DC Comics properties (Warner Bros. is the parent company of the publisher).

I cannot think of a film that has underperformed as significantly as Green Lantern and has gotten the go ahead for a sequel. I recall talk of a Godzilla (1998) sequel since its worldwide earnings were significant enough to warrant another go round for the giant lizard, but that follow-up never materialized.

Green Lantern’s worldwide total comes to $118,711 million—still a far cry from its projected $200 million budget (which is rumored to actually soar an additional $100 million when factoring in the film’s marketing). According to the trade, Green Lantern’s box-office dropped a sizeable 66 percent. I think this is even more significant because the film wasn’t vying for the same audiences as this weekend’s other two major releases: Cars 2 and Bad Teacher. However, it will be when Transformers: Dark of the Moon is released midweek.

It’s still too early to tell if Warner Bros. will indeed go through with a Green Lantern sequel, but if they do I certainly hope they pick apart the first film and figure out what worked and what didn’t.

Movie Review: ‘Green Lantern’

There is an art to the adaptation of a comic book to film.

So many elements go into making a successful motion picture, but for an adaptation it’s all about how and what the filmmakers choose to adapt. And for me, this is where Green Lantern fails.

I got the sense that the filmmakers used the source material as a license to throw in everything without concern for what the audience would accept as the film’s established reality. The movie slavishly throws Green Lantern mythos at us that finally, as a filmgoer, you choose to accept it or not. I did not.

Green Lantern: Critics VS. The Fans

There is already debate over Warner Bros adaptation of Green Lantern.

As early as Wednesday of this week (June 15th) the Green Lantern film was getting crushed by critics. The film has a 23% approval rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes and just about everyone who gets paid (or wishes they were getting paid) to review movies is saying just about the same thing,

Green Lantern is a failure.

However, 65% of audiences who have seen the film....like it.

I have seen the movie and I will save my opinion for our special podcast review show, which should be up for listening pleasure later this weekend.

Before seeing the movie I started to wonder if superhero films have now become their own genre of film, and that if Producers and Directors don't provide critics with anything new then it will simply get panned.

Could there simply just be, too many superhero films?

'Green Lantern' Opens Today

I’m going to see Green Lantern in an hour or so and I’m completely torn as to what I can expect. The critics are ravaging it. A few people I know have seen it and loved it. Of course I’m concerned any time a film is not screened early for critics, which is the case with Green Lantern.

None of this seems to be totally affecting me though. I am going into this movie with a completely open mind. I think all of the negative reviews has kept my perspective more open than normal. I say this because I normally will walk into a film thinking “I’m going to really enjoy myself” or “the trailers haven’t been great, but I’m going to turn off my brain and just enjoy it.” With Green Lantern I have been asking myself “I wonder what I will think of this film?” Sure my head is telling me that the lack of confidence that Warner Bros. has shown in this film is all I should need to know about its quality, my head is also telling me that they don’t know what they have on their hands.

You can hear what Jerry and I thought of the film when our Special Edition Green Lantern podcast is posted this weekend. It should be interesting.

One last note: I am hopeful that the film that inspired the following magical moment from last year’s San Diego Comic Con will have a little magic of its own.

Green Lantern Has Some Good Buzz To It

Things may actually be on the up and up for the Green Lantern Film. We know the film isn't opening for reviews until Thursday the 16th but that doesn't mean people have not seen it...and those that have, are saying good things.

And Filmmaker Robert Meyer Burnett from Free Enterprise has this to say in an odd but still positive review,

GREEN LANTERN f***ing ROCKED. The 3D was AWESOME. As a lifelong DC fan, the opening ten minutes made me squeal like schoolgirl. … Believe it. The first ten minutes will make you believe. The 3D is also outstanding. … GREEN LANTERN was terrific fun. The fact that it works at all is a miracle, but it really does cook. The first ten minutes sold me. … The 3D in the opening ten minutes is wonderful. But YOU MUST see it with polarized glasses. The color is great. … It’s not campy at all. The humor is earned. This is obviously all up to debate still, nothing is ever a guarantee. But one thing is clear, with all the advertising the WB has been doing lately, they really want you to see this film.

Lets just hope they did good on their end.

Do Bright Days Lie Ahead for 'Green Lantern'?

I head into the summer movie season with a great deal of optimism until I see a few on the long-awaited films and they turn out to be misfires. It’s at this point that I begin to approach the new releases with a degree of apprehension.

While I enjoyed Thor a great deal more than I expected, I was let down by X-Men: First Class, a film that I got the sense was going to be the underdog comic book film that would strike a more powerful chord with audiences.

Spinoff is reporting that Green Lantern, which opens next week, will not be screened for most critics until the eleventh hour. If you follow film, even casually, you’ll know that this is a strategy used by movie companies to prevent critics from publishing negative—of flat out scathing—early reviews. With Rotten Tomatoes being many people’s source of information on the quality of upcoming films, early negative reviews could be pretty damaging for a film. Typically, every genre website writes up something on the status of early reviews for comic book films.

There is a lot riding on Green Lantern. Warner Bros. is looking for new properties that will lift the imagination of movie audiences now that the Harry Potter series is coming to a close. With an endless stack of comic book properties at their disposal, Green Lantern seemed to be the first big screen adaptation of a second-tier comic book hero that would test the waters for those that could follow (e.g. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, etc.). While I have been extremely happy with how closely the filmmakers appear to have embraced the source material, which is steeped heavily in sci-fi, I expect that if the movie fails to find an audience the blame may be laid upon those elements to which comic book fans seems to be responding.

I’m a realist. Movie companies don’t withhold films that they are proud to present from movie critics. I can’t help but go into Green Lantern next week with a fair amount of caution about the quality of the film. However, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
