Comic Twart Celebrates its First Birthday

Comic Twart celebrates its first birthday this week and they have served up a lifetime of great art over the last year. For the uninitiated, Comic Twart is a sort of jam session of talented comic book artists who are given a topic by the site's moderator and several of them will do their take on said topic. The results are often stunning (a favorite of mine remains Chris Samnee's minimalist JLA).

In commemoration of their first milestone, site collaborator Evan Shaner contributed a wonderful retrospective piece covering all of the topics so far (Hercules, Marvel's What If, Italian Spider-Man and many more). If you are not following Comic Twart do so right away! For comic book fans it is one of the most singularly pleasing sites on the web.

Francesco Francavilla Takes on Superman

I usually check in with Comic Twart a few times a week. First to see what subject the contributing artists are going to tackle and then, periodically, to see what they come up with. This week see interpretations of the Man of Steel and it is going to be difficult to top Francesco Francavilla's homage to one of Superman's most well known catchphrases.

Comic Twart: Minimilast Challenge

Last month I shared some pictures from this very cool blog by comic book artists called Comic Twart. Each week a group of artists take on a selected subject and then they post their work. This week: an exercise in minimalism. How amazing would Mitch Breitweiser's (above) Captain America image be as a teaser for next summer Cap movie? Below is Chris Samnee's extremely cool minimalist take on the Justice League.

Comic Twart: A Comic Artist Jam Session

This evening, after a marathon reading session, I came across a wonderfully diverting blog called Comic Twart (TWitter ARTists I believe).  I enjoy seeing work from artists when they take a stab at characters that we don't typically get to see them draw or create pieces that don't fit a comic book format.

The site boasts contributions from artists such as Chris Samnee (Thor: The Mighty Avenger), Ron Salas (Existence 2.0), Declan Shalvey (28 Days Later), Mitch Breitweiser (Captain America: Patriot) and more.  The artists have taken on versions of Nick Fury, Archie, Man-Thing, Captain Marvel, Popeye, the Italian Spider-Man (hilarious!) and many, many more stunning illustrations.

Above is Francesco Francavilla's take on a Marvel What If?: What if the Avengers were Earth's First Heroes?  Below is Evan Shaner's Italian Spider-Man, which is as hilariously dated as the spoof video that inspired it (you can find it on YouTube).
