Supreme Power

Supreme Power
Written by KYLE HIGGINS Penciled by MANUEL GARCIA

One of the best books to come out of the summer season is Supreme Power from Marvel's Max Comics.

This is a 4 part mini series that brings characters Hyperion and Doctor Spectrum back to their roots from the original Supreme Power series that debut back in 2003 from writer J. Michael Straczynski.

The Supreme Power world is as close to the real world that a comic book can get. This is something JMS stressed in his original run, focusing mainly on the idea of what would happen if a seedy government raised Superman.

The biggest unresolved plot from the original series was, who or what was really controlling Doctor Spectrum. The awesome power that 'Spectrum wields comes from a power crystal that is fused to his hand. From time to time the crystal becomes sentient, acting to either protect Hyperion or to bring together other super humans, always referring them to as "The Children"

In this new series writer Kyle Higgins continues this plot as Doctor Spectrum tries to balance his control over his powers while at the same time act as America's only superhero. Then just as that balance tips the world discovers that Hyperion is still alive.

Supreme Power was always a character driven book and not about the spectacle of super humans who can tear down countries (which was done in other stories).

I was a huge fan of the original run and I can't praise Higgins enough for bringing the book back to its core. We often hear that is what writers want to do but the difference between those books and this, is that it was accomplished.

Justice League and Action Comics Most Anticipated New DC Book

CBR took a poll, asking fans what books from DC they are most likely to get.

The two highest were Justice League and Action Comics.

Justice League came in with 57.7% of the votes with Action Comics coming in 55.9%of the vote.

Both of these titles seemed like no brainers. And whether you are excited about DC Comics relaunch or not these titles would have been top sellers regardless, due to the creative teams.

See how the rest of the titles tallied here.

On an unrelated note...this is the book I am most looking forward to come September.

Oh yeah "this is going to be good"

Details On New "Supreme Power"

If you were a big fan of J. Michael Straczsnki's Supreme Power series then you must be pretty jazzed about the announcement that come this June, the book returns for a four issue mini series.

The series will be written by Kyle Higgins and drawn by Manuel Garica.

Both CBR and Newsarama interviewed Kyle Higgins, and it looks like fans are in for a treat as the creative team wishes to return to the ideas that made Supreme Power so popular when it was first released in 2003.

The original Supreme Power was a new take on Marvel's answer to the JLA, The Squadron Supreme.

In J. Michael Straczsnki's update readers were given an almost HBO style take on superheroes.

C2E2: Marvel Brings Back 'Supreme Power'

One of the smaller announcements to come out of C2E2 from Marvel's 'Next Big Thing'  panel was that writer Kyle Higgins will be tackling the (anti)heroes from Supreme Power in a new four issue mini-series under Marvel's MAX imprint.

Supreme Power was a  MAX series first released in 2003 by writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Gary Frank, a title that revamped the characters from The Squadron Supreme.

I believe the idea was to complete with Wildstorm's The Authority and provide readers with an 'Ultimate' version of Hyperion and the other heroes from the Squadron.

In Supreme Power a baby is found in a crashed spaceship by a 'kindly couple' but is then quickly taken away by the government and over the next several years the child (named Mark Milton) is brainwashed into becoming the perfect American soldier.

This was called Project: Hyperion
