Details On New "Supreme Power"

If you were a big fan of J. Michael Straczsnki's Supreme Power series then you must be pretty jazzed about the announcement that come this June, the book returns for a four issue mini series.

The series will be written by Kyle Higgins and drawn by Manuel Garica.

Both CBR and Newsarama interviewed Kyle Higgins, and it looks like fans are in for a treat as the creative team wishes to return to the ideas that made Supreme Power so popular when it was first released in 2003.

The original Supreme Power was a new take on Marvel's answer to the JLA, The Squadron Supreme.

In J. Michael Straczsnki's update readers were given an almost HBO style take on superheroes.

JMS left the series shortly after it was reworked into a new Squadron Supreme title and the characters were last seen in a new(er) vol. written by Howard Chaykin.

In Higgin's Supreme Power the story takes place a few years after Chaykin's Squadron run.

But the only thing to know about the new series is that Mark Milton aka Hyperion exiled himself after his attack on the U.S. Government, which killed the President.

A main character for the new Supreme Power title is Joe Ledger aka Dr.Spectrum.

In the interview with CBR Higgins says this about the character,"Joe's a soldier first and foremost, and that's still the case here, even though his role has changed.  Joe stayed behind after Mark's "attack" and has been forced to deal with the fallout and the rebuilding, which has thrust him into a much more public role.  And for the time being, that's exactly what the country seems to need."

The new series will showcase characters like The Blurr and Emil Burbank but the stories focus is mainly on Joe Ledger and Mark Milton.

This new series promises to return Supreme Power's back to it roots as a world that is close to ours as possible. Higgins says (again from his interview from CBR) ""it's our world... but with super powers" is what we're gunning for.  These are real people with often selfish goals and motivations.  The world of the book will be familiar; it's going to be grounded."

As a fan I can't express how truly excited I am for this book. Supreme Power was my return to Marvel comics with characters I quickly came to love and loath at the same time. I often go back and re read the series often wishing that Marvel would revisit them.

Higgins says in both interviews that this mini series is self contained but if there is enough interest there is definitely areas to explore for a new on going.

I can only hope.
