'The Green Hornet' Deserves Some Buzz

Some words are worth eating, and I may be dining on my own in about a week.
That’s when The Green Hornet is released—a film that enjoyed little buzz or fanfare after the film’s trailer premiered last summer. Its credibility wasn’t helped any by releasing the film in January (the tomb of forgotten films) or the fact that its director and star are untested in this genre of film. Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directs Seth Rogan as publishing heir Britt Reid who becomes the Green Hornet to avenge his father’s death and take down crime in Los Angeles. Joined by his sidekick Kato, the two infiltrate the underground crime scene by posing as criminals to take it down from the inside.
I thought the first trailer was pretty unimpressive, but some of the new clips demonstrate that Gondry knows how to handle an action sequence.  The following scene reminds me of an old issue of Robin in which Tim Drake surveys his environment and takes stock of everything he can use as a weapon. Here Kato does the same and Gondry employs some inventive techniques to demonstrate Kato’s sharp fighting skills.

This second scene establishes that we may be in store for some serious fun and well choreographed action sequences. Watch as Kato jumps into the car next to him to conduct some sweet bad guy dispensing in a matter of seconds. It looks as though Jay Chou’s Kato is going to be the real secret weapon behind The Green Hornet.

The Green Hornet hits theaters on January 14th.
