Ellis to Take on 'Secret Avengers' in July

It was announced this weekend at Wonder Con that Warren Ellis (Planetary) would be taking over Secret Avengers for a six issue one-and-done run after Nick Spencer’s four-issue turn on the book. Spencer himself will follow Ed Brubaker who ties up his final arc on the book with issue #12.

Ellis’ run will not feature a complete arc when all is said and done, he said he’s more interested in telling fun short stories featuring smaller parts of the team that Brubaker originally brought to the title. Additionally he said he would also stay true to Brubaker’s original concept of the book, while trying to amp the stories up.

There is no doubt the book is going from one set of able hands to the next, but my fear is that when books do switch off from creator to creator—especially new titles—the book runs the risk of losing its focus. I feel that we are on the edge of the same problem with Batman and Robin, a book that will see a fourth creative team on the book when Judd Winick writes a three-issue arc beginning with #23.

Again, I’m not making any comments about the writing. Ellis and Winick are two incredible scribes. My issue is with a book losing its focus when creative teams bounce on and off the book.

Ellis is joined by James McElvie for issue #16 of Secret Avengers this July.
