'Batman and Robin' Deserves Better Than This

Batman and Robin deserves better than this.

Why must DC continue to pass this book around from writer to writer? They had such a great thing going after Grant Morrison’s memorable sixteen issue run on the title, which introduced Dick Grayson as Batman and Damian Wayne as Robin.

Peter Tomasi was announced as the new writer for the series, but Paul Cornell subbed for the writer who was busy wrapping up Brightest Day. Then Tomasi comes in and we learn it’s only for a single arc because Judd Winick is going to follow with a three-issue arc of his own. Today DC’s solicits for August were published and you’ll never guess what—David Hine is handling writing chores on the title after Winick.

First off, if this seems nitpicky, let me just say that good storytelling is paramount. And DC has handed the reins over to some of the best writers in the business following Morrison’s run. But if you continue to switch writers on a title the book begins to lose its focus and becomes more of an anthology series. I think about what happened to Superman/Batman after Jeph Loeb left after a fantastic run. The book has just seemed pretty aimless. I pick it up when a writer with a storyline that piques my interest, the book hasn’t been on my regular pull list for years.

While I enjoy an engrossing, well-structured arc, I prefer a sprawling storyline which encompasses several arcs. Think of the epic story Morrison has told in the Bat-universe, the mythos Geoff Johns has established in Green Lantern, and long form story arc Winick was able to employ during his first year on Power Girl. Letting a writer come in with a big plan for a book, in my estimation, often yields more compelling stories.

Batman and Robin #26 is set for release on August 10th.
