As Gandalf taught us a few years back, you can’t keep a good wizard down.
On Friday the new digital-version of the popular comic-book trade magazine Wizard World appeared online, and the content and look should be extremely familiar to fans. To stay current on what is going on in the industry, the magazine has gone weekly—the first issue is comes in at 34 pages.
The Editorial staff promises that the “digi-zine gives fans of all genres what they crave - a preview and an inside look at fresh and innovative new products, and is available both as a downloadable magazine and as an Apple iPad app.”
My feeling is that Wizard World has still lost an opportunity here to become the next source for news about all things comic books, video games, toys and such by providing daily content through up-to-the-minute posts. After all Wizard World has two things going for it: 1) strong name recognition from comic book readers, and 2) a strong relationship with the comic book companies who have, for years, provided Wizard with exclusives and interviews.
I’m glad to see Wizard World is up and going again, in this smarter format, but I think they may still not be on the right track.
