To make a truly great superhero or science fiction film a few things have to happen.
Most important you have to take an extraordinary situation and give it a human heart.
One movie does that better than any other.
I am talking about,
As the film starts we meet Howard…a regular Joe duck. His world is not that different than ours.
For 1986 that is.
The movie begins with Howard coming home to his apt. after a long day working his feathers to the bone. We can immediately relate to our soon to be savior.
He likes beer, watching TV and Porn.
Then just as he begins to relax his bill….the extraordinary happens. Howard is plucked from his world and sent to ours.
Moving through space Howard ventures through the cosmos and descends down on our planet.
Clearly this is a reflection of God sending us Jesus.
Once on ‘human’ Earth Howard is found by the lovely Beverly who takes Howard in, giving him shelter and a warm bed.
Women have a sixth sense when it comes to things and here it is no exception. She knows (but not of exactly what) that Howard is here to do great things.
A friendship is born and then later a love that would rival Tom and Katie’s.
As Howard adjusts to his new home sinister things are happening.
Dr. Walter Jenning the man responsible for Howard’s arrival is reworking his dimensional-jumping device and becomes bonded to…or taken over by a powerful alien known as ‘Dark Overlord’
Clearly…The Devil.
The Dark Overlord plans to use the dimensional-jumping device to bring his hell spawns to Earth.
The only way to prevent this is to destroy the dimensional-jumping device…which would mean Howard could never return home.
Sacrificing this option (like Samson did for the Christians) Howard rips down the pillars of the dimensional-jumping device and banishes the Dark Overlord and his minions to the blackness of space.
Howard proves to be a true champion of the people…even if we are not his people.
Just as James Cameron has done for so many…Howard gave us the greatest gift of all.
Hope.
"Howard the Duck"…truly is the great superhero movie of all time.
