Aronofsky off of 'The Wolverine'

Well, this is a mite unfortunate. Darren Aronofsky is officially off of The Wolverine according to statements by the director and 20th Century Fox.

Fans seemed genuinely excited for the out-of-the-box decision to have the visionary director take Logan on his next adventure in the X-Men franchise. Writer Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) had fashioned a script that features Marvel’s feral mutant in Japan in a story that has been rumored to follow the iconic 1982 Wolverine mini-series from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

With planning and scheduling underway, the director found that the movie’s production would have him out of the country—and more importantly, away from his family—for over a year.

So the question is what have we lost?

It’s hard to say for sure, because we’ve never seen Aronofsky take on a property like this. I think it’s fair to say that we were going to get a comic book film that was not like any other, because the director in not at all conventional. We still have a script by McQuarrie that may have been one of the things that attracted the director to the project, so we still have that. What this film is going to need is a director that is not going to be strong-armed into filling the movie with randomly selected characters that add to or progress the story (one of the many problems with X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Once we hear a new name, we’re either going to say “No not that person!” or “Now that is interesting.”

So who is my choice for a replacement? Kathryn Bigelow, Academy Award-winning director of The Hurt Locker. Now, that would be interesting.
