Shane Black Expected to Write and Direct 'Iron Man 3'

While we still do not have an official announcement, it looks like Shane Black has indeed been tapped as the director—and writer—of Iron Man 3 per Ain’t it Cool News.

The site also reports that this will not be a crossover film with appearances by any of the Avengers characters. I suspect that this means no Nick Fury as well. While I enjoyed Iron Man 3 more than most, based on the fairly vitriolic response to the film, but it was flawed nonetheless. It seemed overeager to recapture the charm of the first film while not doing enough interesting stuff with our hero; the film was also burdened with having to tie-into The Avengers.

According to the AICN piece, Shane Black wants to bring a Tom Clany-esque approach to the next film with “real-world” villains. It will be interesting to see what “real world” villains means, because that doesn’t sound like Mandarin, Crimson Dynamo or Fin Fang Foom. Okay, I don’t really want Fin Fang Foom, but I really like saying Fin Fang Foom.

I know I can enjoy an Iron Man thriller, but I’m still longing for a proper sci-fi baddie for Iron Man to do battle with. I assumed that once the “reality” of The Avengers was established, it would open the doors for villains that the filmmakers might not have otherwise thought they could use (Man Bull anyone?).

Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey, Jr., is scheduled for release in the summer of 2013.
