'Fear Itself' Promises to Not Take 'Itself' Too Seriously

Two of Marvel’s Fear Itself mini-series solicits caught me somewhat off guard last week, since they appeared to be the antithesis of the main book. This June Marvel will release Fear Itself: Deadpool and Fear Itself: Fearsome Four (starring Howard the Duck among others). It’s good to know that the line-wide crossover has enough room for some yucks and isn’t taking Itself too seriously.

Official Press Release

This June, brace yourself for Fear Itself: Deadpool #1 (of 3) as award-winning writer Christopher Hastings (Dr. McNinja) and fan favorite artist Bong Dazo throw Deadpool right into the thick of Fear Itself, the blockbuster comics event of the year! When the Marvel Universe was under attack from the Skrulls – Wade Wilson answered the call to save the World, but can Deadpool be of any help against the God of Fear? If there’s money to be made, you can bet he’ll try. When the Serpent terrorizes the Marvel Universe with his unstoppable army and leave Earth’s Mightiest battered and bruised, all hope lies in…Deadpool?

“Fear Itself is a story with tremendous gravity and emotional heft. Matt Fraction's doing an amazing job of tapping into the real fears of everyday people, and retelling them through the troubles of the Marvel heroes,” explains writer Christopher Hastings. “Of course this means its all the more fun to bring in the clown with a gun! Deadpool is my favorite Marvel character, and I'm so excited to write for him. This mini is going to be a lot of fun, the way that Deadpool knows fun. A gratuitous number of explosions are guaranteed!”

Can Wade get his hands on one of the Worthy’s hammers or will he just head to the hardware store and pick himself up a substitute? Either way, it will definitely affect his bank account because; this June Deadpool faces the full fury of horror in Fear Itself: Deadpool #1 (of 3)!

Official Press Release

This June, Marvel’s most monstrous heroes step up in Fear Itself: Fearsome Four #1 (of 4), from rising star writer Brandon Montclare, legendary artist Michael Kaluta, and rising star artist Ryan Bodenheim! Whoever knows fear burns at the touch of Man-Thing and, with the arrival of Fear Itself, he’s about to turn all of New York into a bonfire! But with Marvel’s mightiest pinned down by “The Worthy,” who can protect the Big Apple from the rampage of a creature that that’s more monster than man? Howard the Duck, She-Hulk, Frankenstein’s Monster and Nighthawk are out to extinguish the Man-Thing’s flame by means necessary as the all-new, all-outcast Fearsome Four!

“As stand-ins for the Fantastic Four, they may not inspire confidence in the people they’re sworn to protect—but they each have a great story to tell,” said series writer Brandon Montclare. “They’re going to turn some heads, and then knock them clean off!”

Can the Fearsome Four deliver the coup de grace while there’s still a city to save or will these would-be defenders unwittingly give themselves over to the dread deep within themselves? Find out as Earth’s Mightiest Monsters cut a path of destruction clean through 2011’s biggest comics event, only Fear Itself: Fearsome Four #1 (of 4)!
