C2E2: 'Fear Itself' Panel

Marvel’s heavy-hitters were on-hand for today’s Fear Itself panel at C2E2, and they had plenty to say. Series-helmer Matt Fraction appeared with Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers), editor C.B. Cepulski, Fred Van Lente (Alpha Flight), and Nick Spencer (Iron Man 2.0).

Fraction presents Fear Itself as Thor’s worst fear as "the Red Skull discovers Odin might not be the All-Father." Ultimately the mini-series is a Captain America and Thor story that reaches far and wide across the Marvel Universe. Fraction said that the ramifications of Fear Itself may be felt for somewhere between one to three years.

“We’ve got a really big plan” said the writer who’s getting his first opportunity to guide an enormous Marvel crossover event—a position that, for the past few years, has only been held by Bendis (Secret Invasion and House of M) and Mark Millar (Civil War).

Fraction ensured that readers will not be required to read all of the supporting books as Fear Itself will be a self-contained story. The cross-overs are so far occurring in the pages of Fraction’s Iron Man and his new Thor title with superstar artist Olivier Coipel, Spencer’s Iron Man 2.0, and both of Bendis’ Avengers books among others. Marvel has also announced a handful of one-shots and supporting minis: Fear Itself Black Widow and Fear Itself: The Deep, both by writer Cullen Bunn (Sixth Gun).

"This is a pretty big deal for the Avengers books and characters," said Bendis of his part of the Fear Itself tie-ins. "This is the biggest roster change and franchise change the Avengers have had since I've come on the book."

"There's going to be a surprising romance between characters who you know who have not been romantically involved, added Bendis.”  The writer also said that Chris Bachalo (X-Men) would also be drawing Avengers. Bendis re-iterated the stand-alone approach to the mini and the supporting stories by stating that the Avengers could be read without having to read any other titles.

Beast, Valkyrie and Black Widow would be at the front and center of Spencer’s New Avengers Fear Itself tie-in according to the writer. “We're going to look at sort of the human perspective.” Spencer also informed the audience that his run on Secret Avengers would only be through the Fear Itself storyline and that the book would be delivered by a new writer who Spencer admits “once you see who's next, you're going to forget that I was on it.”

After being asked by a fan, who is most affected by Fear Itself, Fraction and Bendis agreed on the answer: The Avengers. Fraction added that the FF would also be affected “profoundly.”

Fraction added that Fear Itself was going to be, for the Hulk, the “beginning of something really fun and different.” He also intimated that readers would be served up a good battle between Thor and Hulk.

Well, we got some interesting details on the series today for certain!
